2002 Day Four:
In Washington D.C.

We left Bristol, VA at 3:09 AM. Outside it was cloudy, with a temperature of 66.6 degrees. Inside the car was 67.8 degrees, and we had traveled 2481.2 miles. We were on our way to our nation's capitol, Washington, D.C. via I-81 & I-66 (Front Royal) directly into D.C. We finally arrived in D.C. at 10:18 AM. Outside it was partly cloudy, and the temperature was 78.4 degrees. Inside, it was 75.7 degrees and we had traveled 2855.2 miles.

This first picture is of me in the back of Dad's SUV. The Marshall Tucker Band once wrote, "I'll always hang my hat under those Blue Ridge Mountain skies." The second picture is simply spectacular...me on the banks of the Potomac River. It's humid, but beautiful outside. No one can prepare you for the first time you see the Potomac and then the top of the Washington Monument rising above the trees. Then, you see the Lincoln Memorial off to the right and you are simply overcome with emotion and patriotism.

The third picture is me at the Korean War Memorial. This memorial doesn't seem to get the attention of others, but it is quite moving and draws big crowds. Oh...I was the ONLY dog (except for a K-9 unit) on the entire mall. All of the police and park workers were VERY friendly to me. The visitors also were quite friendly and seemed often surprised to see a doggy there. I'm glad Dad brought me! The National Mall should be on EVERY American's "A" list of places to visit before they die. Dad and I will never forget it. The fourth picture is the photo-opportunity of a lifetime. 'Nuff said.

Here I am in the fifth picture at the entrance to the Vietnam Memorial. And in the sixth picture, more than 30 years later, Dad finally gets to say "goodbye" to a childhood friend. (Sorry about it being blurry, I'm not a very good photographer.)

The seventh picture is me in front of the Reflecting Pool, between the Lincoln and Washington Memorials. You might be able to make out the Capitol way in the distance. Yes, that's a construction crane in the shot.

And the last shot is me at the Lincoln Memorial. God Bless America.

We finally had to depart D.C. around noon (as Dad wanted to avoid the afternoon traffic and HOV restrictions.) We headed west via 66, 270 then 70 and divert on 68, the National Highway, which allows you to avoid the Pennsylvania Turnpike. We arrived in Cumberland, Maryland at 2:15 PM. We had traveled 3005.8 miles, and it was mostly cloudy and muggy outside. 81 degrees outside, and 73.2 degrees inside.

I'll write again when I get a chance!

Sincerely,

Jordan
